May's Birthstone: Emerald
Emerald holds a special place between the gemstones family. With its vibrant green colour, lucky May babies have emerald as their birthstone!
The vibrant colour of emeralds comes from the mineral beryl that comes into contact with trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. It is these elements that give emeralds their iconic green colour. Either as a day to day wear or for special occasions, emeralds are a must have in your collection for a pop of colour!
Emeralds have a history behind, the first people to mine the stones were Ancient Egyptians. The oldest emeralds are around 2.97 billion years old, but the first known emeralds were mined in Egypt in about 1500 BC.
There are larger carved examples of natural emerald, but the Duke of Devonshire emerald remains one of the largest uncut examples of the gemstone. It weighs an incredible 1383.93 carats and is currently kept in “The Vault” in London’s Natural History Museum.
They are the symbol of rebirth. Emeralds are said to enhance the clairvoyance of their owner. Back then it was believed that placing an emerald beneath your tongue would make you foresee the future. Emeralds are also thought to guard against memory loss and enhance intuition.
From all these meanings behind Emeralds, they are one of the most beautiful and rare stones of the gem family.
