Garnet is a gorgeous gemstone that can be found in all colours, however is most commonly seen in dark red shades. It is the birthstone of the month January, and is known to symbolise commitment, friendship and trust. The name Garnet originates from the Middle English word ‘Gernet’ meaning ‘dark red’. Garnets have been used since the Bronze Age for decorative purposes and jewellery. The stone is fairly durable and falls somewhere between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Mohs Scale depending on the species. This makes it perfect for jewellery! It was discovered in Egyptian art and is now found primarily in Brazil, Namibia and Kenya.
Garnet is a symbol of lasting friendship, with healers believing alleviated inflammation and heart issues. It was also thought to enhance karma with astrologers believing if you do good while wearing the stone, more good will be bestowed upon you. Garnet features prominently in Greek Mythology, establishing its reputation as a stone of courage and positive thinking.
